SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) is a high-performance fiber-reinforced composite material. With the advantages of light weight, high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, superior insulation and high molding accuracy, it is widely used in automotive industry, electrical equipment, rail transit, construction materials, new energy and other fields, serving as one of the core materials in the modern high-end composite material industry. Magnesium Oxide is an indispensable core functional additive in the whole process of SMC sheet production, curing storage and compression molding, which directly determines the process stability and comprehensive performance of finished SMC sheets.
Controllable resin thickening is the most critical function of Magnesium Oxide in SMC sheets. The core procedure of SMC production is resin paste preparation and curing. The initial unsaturated polyester resin paste has low viscosity and excessive fluidity, which makes it impossible to realize uniform glass fiber impregnation and subsequent sheet molding. Special active magnesium oxide reacts mildly and controllably with carboxyl groups in the resin, gradually increasing the viscosity of the resin paste. It stably raises the viscosity from the initial 30-50 Pa·s to the optimal processing range of 10⁵-10⁶ Pa·s, making the resin paste non-sticky, easy to cut and storable, which perfectly meets the needs of industrial mass production of SMC sheets.
Meanwhile, magnesium oxide accurately controls the SMC curing rhythm and avoids production process defects. In traditional production processes, excessively fast thickening of resin paste will cause premature curing of sheets before molding, resulting in uneven glass fiber infiltration and sheet cracking; too slow thickening will lead to resin flowing, material loss and uneven molding thickness. High-activity magnesium oxide features mild reaction and uniform thickening, which can precisely control the SMC curing cycle, ensure uniform thickness and dense structure of sheets, greatly reduce the defective rate, and improve production yield and efficiency.
In terms of finished product performance optimization, magnesium oxide comprehensively improves the overall quality of SMC sheets and products. On the one hand, it strengthens the interfacial bonding force between resin and glass fiber, improves the tensile strength, flexural strength and hardness of SMC materials, and endows products with stronger impact resistance and deformation resistance. On the other hand, it optimizes the internal structure of materials, reduces molding pores, and improves the aging resistance, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, insulation and heat insulation performance of SMC products, effectively extending the service life and adapting to harsh application scenarios such as outdoor, electrical and vehicle environments.
Magnesium oxide has strong compatibility and high cost performance. It is suitable for various SMC formula systems and compatible with different specifications of glass fibers, curing agents and functional fillers. It can upgrade product quality without significantly adjusting the original production process. With stable thickening effect, excellent performance improvement and low-cost advantages, active magnesium oxide has become a standardized and essential core additive for SMC sheet production, and a key raw material to ensure stable quality of SMC composite materials and support the upgrading of high-end products.
