The “Magic Additive” – Magnesium Oxide Transforming Ceramic Glaze Quality

During firing in ceramic kilns, Magnesium Oxide serves as a subtle yet vital raw material. As a common alkaline oxide, it is only added at 1% to 5% in glaze formulas. Through sophisticated chemical reactions, it comprehensively improves the texture, physical properties and artistic expression of ceramics, making it an indispensable functional additive for the ceramic industry.

The primary function of Magnesium Oxide is to optimize the melting behavior of glazes. Acting as a special high-temperature flux, magnesium oxide does not melt at low temperatures. Instead, it disrupts the silicate network structure and reduces the high-temperature viscosity of glazes. Within the firing range of 1250–1350°C, it enables glazes to flow evenly and fully fill pores of ceramic bodies, forming smooth and compact glaze layers. This property reduces firing temperature by 50–100°C, cutting energy consumption and the risk of product deformation. It also prevents glaze defects such as pinholes and crawling, greatly raising the yield rate. For low-temperature fast-firing processes, the outstanding melting performance of magnesium-containing glazes effectively boosts production efficiency.

Magnesium oxide is also an excellent performance enhancer. It reacts with silicon and aluminum ions in glazes to form high-strength microcrystalline phases including forsterite and spinel. These microcrystals act as rigid frameworks, pushing the microhardness of glaze layers up to 5.26 GPa with Moh’s hardness improved above Grade 7, delivering outstanding wear resistance. More importantly, magnesium oxide adjusts the thermal expansion coefficient of glazes to match ceramic bodies. Like a buffer, it relieves internal stress generated during cooling and fundamentally prevents glaze cracking and peeling, which is especially important for large-sized and thick-walled ceramic products. Moreover, the stable magnesium silicate structure enhances the acid and alkali resistance of glazes and extends the service life of ceramics.

Magnesium oxide offers great flexibility in aesthetic effects and innovative applications. Appropriate dosage increases the refractive index of glazes, endowing transparent glazes with crystal-clear luster. Controlled addition encourages microcrystal precipitation to create soft matte or opalescent glaze surfaces with silky touch. When used in colored glazes, magnesium oxide stabilizes color ions, maintaining pure and stable cobalt blue in blue-and-white porcelain and cyan green in celadon, and suppresses undesired discoloration caused by impurities. For art ceramics, precise control of magnesium oxide dosage and firing schedule promotes the precipitation of acicular and flaky crystals to form natural crystalline textures. Combined with other oxides, it can even produce iridescent effects and expand possibilities for artistic creation.

Nowadays, magnesium oxide has become a core raw material for eco-friendly ceramics. It can replace traditional lead-containing fluxes to manufacture tableware ceramics complying with food safety standards. Its production waste can be recycled, which aligns with sustainable development goals. From frost-resistant and wear-resistant architectural tiles, smooth translucent daily-use ceramics to art ceramics with unique textures, magnesium oxide delivers remarkable material efficiency through versatile functions. It continuously drives the ceramic industry to achieve simultaneous upgrades in performance and aesthetic design.
